vSAN On-Disk Format Upgrade

Post Upgrade tasks

Once you upgrade all ESXi hosts, Make sure vSAN health plugin is not reporting any issues.
If any driver or firmware upgrade/downgrade is needed then do it.


vSAN On-Disk Format Upgrade


Once you upgrade complete all ESXi host upgrade and health plugin is not reporting any errors then you can procced with vSAN On Disk Firmware Upgrade.
In Old version of vSAN you had to migrate all data from Disk groups, delete disk groups and create new disk groups. With vSAN 6.x we no longer need to delete disk groups or migration vms.
On Disk Format can be performed without any disturbance to VMs.

vSAN on-disk Format upgrade using web client

  • Login to web client and select vSAN Cluster.
  • Go to Configure tab.
  • Click on General under vSAN.
  • Check current on-disk format version.
  • Click on Pre-upgrade check button to run pre-upgrade checks.
  • Once above precheck completes, click on Upgrade to start on-disk upgrade process.
It will wait 20/30minutes to complete the on-disk upgrade process.

vSAN on-disk Format upgrade using RVC

  • Login to RVC console.

  • Run vsan.disks_stats command to see the disk usages, on-disk format version and health status.
  • Run vsan.ondisk_upgrade command to start on-disk upgrade process.
  • Run vsan.obj_status_report command to get status of all objects and objects on-disk format version.

after upgrading on disk format, run the health check again and make sure vSAN health plugin is not reporting any issues.
